Instinctive and intuitive movement: my July reflections

Hello curious person

July has been one of those months that’s required I reach deep within myself and find an adaptive quality. There have been many little changes throughout the month along with constant shifts in pace, similar to that of the British weather. Some moments it felt like I was in the middle of a whirlwind whilst other it was like a still lake.

To be honest, it was quite fitting with our theme of the month. We have been exploring a theme that I named “Do you need a little wiggle or rock?”. My aim for this theme has been to create the space where you can move however you need to and want to. It started small and has expanded as the week month unfolded. Little options here and there with plenty of guidance shifted to minutes where I would simply invite everyone move how you want to.

This theme, as anyone who attended the class would know, was inspired by the morning stretch. You don’t necessarily decide to do that; it just happens. Generally, it feels pretty good too. I feel that we all have those movements that just feel fantastic in our own bodies – mine is a twist in any or which way. It feels like it is hardcoded into the tissues of my body. A twist pretty much always feels good whether that’s a big, obvious stretch or a small rotation through the trunk of my body. I know this, through yoga, and it comes in handy.

I think back to the previous month where I also picked a theme for the month and gave it the time and space to unfold. Same idea; completely different outcome! This one has been so much more fuelled by the mood, weather, circumstance (hence my comment that it was a fitting theme for the month) and energy. It meant that the sequence sparked into life in front of your eyes as I was teaching to give space for free movement.

I often mentioned how this may feel a little sticky in class. It’s easier to be told what to do than it is to shut your eyes and take that leap of faith. In some ways, I was talking to myself in at these points because I felt massively uncomfortable when I first asked people to move however they wanted. I doubted myself and felt like a little bit of a fraud. It was a test of my willpower because to remind myself that, for this to happen effectively, I needed to shut up.

Anyway, I saw people embrace it as the month passed. Classes were filled with people not worrying about others and just moving. Letting their instincts and intuition guide them. That’s a powerful tool.

The past two months have been themes that really look at aspects of yoga that we can take off the mat. What was the takeaway from this theme? Movement is great, trust your instincts and a little goes a long way. People were not cracking out the hardest poses they’ve ever done when invited to freestyle. It was the simple things.

As always, thank you

Sam
